Frequently Asked Questions

  • To support practices that refer cases to us, we will not provide routine (first opinion) veterinary services to any pets of clients that have been seen for any referral treatment in the preceding six months.

  • We only provide medication for treatment of the medical condition that your pet was referred to the practice for. For all other medication, please contact your regular veterinary practice.

  • If your pet is urgently unwell, the best emergency treatment option will usually be your own vet practice. If a pet needs urgent referral, your own vet will then arrange referral to South Devon Referrals if appropriate. If your animal is receiving ongoing treatment at the practice, then we advise contacting South Devon Referrals directly,  we will have provided you with this information as part of your written discharge instructions.

  • We ask for 48 hours notice for repeat prescriptions. We are happy to arrange for repeat prescriptions to be sent out to you by post if more convenient than collecting form South Devon Referrals.

  • South Devon Referrals only sees animals that have been referred by your usual veterinary surgeon. Once we receive the necessary referral information from your vet, we will phone you to arrange a convenient appointment.

  • Payment for all treatment is due at the time. This policy ensures we keep our prices as low as possible. In some circumstances we are able to arrange direct claims from insurance companies: if you wish to investigate this option please discuss with the practice before commencing treatment.

  • Our insurance administration fee is £12 per claim. This charge contributes towards the cost of ensuring we efficiently process all claim forms and follow up queries without delay.

  • We update referring vets on all tests and treatment that your pet has received at South Devon Referrals, usually on the day of treatment or discharge from hospital. We also quickly respond to any queries from referring vets to ensure that any questions can be quickly resolved.

  • South Devon Referrals has 24 hour per day on site qualified nursing care for all hospitalised patients, with regular ward rounds by our referral clinicians. Our modern hospitalisation facilities are designed to ensure that in patients are safe and comfortable and recover as quickly as possible.

  • The results of outpatient CT scans are emailed directly to the referring practice, who will discuss the findings with you directly.

  • Cash, Debit and Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Visa Debit), BACS transfer (in advance of collecting your pet).

  • We are part of the RSA preferred referral network: we are able to ensure that claims are efficiently managed without any additional excess payable by the client. More information on the RSA preferred referral network is available here.
